The Oak Room concentrates on the music scene in North Carolina's "Triangle" area -- Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Some emerging bands from the area that you might have heard of are The Rosebuds, The Comas (though they've left NC for NYC) and Cities. Back in the heyday of the Archers of Loaf, Polvo, and Superchunk, the area was supposed to be "the next Seattle." That didn't pan out, but there's still a strong, supportive local scene. The author, Mark, launched the blog in September 2004 to provide a structure to his exploration of local bands. He explains his thoughts here. Updated sporadically in its early days, The Oak Room is currently updated every Friday.
